Explore Middlemarch - Inland Dunedin

Middlemarch is an hour's scenic drive from Dunedin or by train aboard the world class Taieri Gorge Railway. (Not running. Watch for new developments.)

The change from the city is remarkable - rural New Zealand at its best. See a sheep being shorn, dogs working sheep, experience the slow pace, the quietness, the wide open sky.

A big thanks to the Strath Taieri Lions for their funding and support.

There's also the Strath Taieri A & P Show in March, Otago Hunt Club's hunts and jumping show in March and April.

You will love the distinct landscape of Middlemarch and the wider Strath Taieri district, and the Rock & Pillar mountain range featured in Peter Jackson's film, "The Hobbit." Take a look! (Strath Taieri features at 1.15min in the first and 2.20min in the second):

Many visitors come to Middlemarch to cycle the iconic Otago Central Rail Trail. Middlemarch is ready to help you have a memorable cycling holiday adventure. Our Tourist Hub has information about locally-based Rail Trail operators, cycle hire outlets and transport options. There is also a great range of acommodation options throughout the district.

Other activities include cycling the many fascinating back roads, walking to New Zealand’s only inland salt lake, visiting the vast Te Papanui Scenic Reserve, fishing for trout in the Taieri River, play golf and tennis, browse the Museum and craft galleries, tramp on the Rock and Pillar Range or take a tour of the Strath Taieri Valley.

We haven't forgotten your latte! Enjoy traditional and contemporary New Zealand foods at one of the local cafés or homestays.

Besides the township of Middlemarch, there's the old mining township of Hyde, Pukerangi, also known for mining, Clarks Junction on the old Dunstan Road and the farming area of Hindon to explore.

We look forward to welcoming you!
